Eduporium Experiment | Stikbot Pt. 2

In this week’s Eduporium Experiment, we are taking a deeper look at Stikbot and its potential to enrich hands-on education in the early grades. Besides being an entertaining, posable toy that allows kids to use stop motion animation anywhere, it’s also a great way for them to learn to work in small groups, problem solve, and get comfortable using new kinds of technology! Eduporium Weekly | Ideas for Expanding Coding Education

All indications are that coding is going to be an absolutely essential skill for today’s students to master. It’s not completely unanimous -- some people still claim soft skills will be more important, but, based on what we know about the current job market and its future forecast, it sure seems as though coding is going to be a part of it for the long term. Some states and school districts require their students to learn at least a little bit of computer science, but these programs are not nearly as far along as they could be. Starting a coding program can be tough for educators, especially when trying to cram all their other requirements into the school day, but there are ways to make it happen, including subtly introducing coding in multiple classes and creating afterschool clubs to help give students the experiences they need.

Eduporium Hosts Day of PD at New Pinky Inc. Makerspace

The power of partnerships is a wonderful thing. After developing a close-knit relationship with the teachers and administrators in the Merrimack, NH SAU 26 district, we were able to leverage another partnership to help bring them some truly innovative professional development. It pays to have a friend with his own makerspace and, using this connection, we put on a day of PD for 30 teachers at Pinky Inc. in Marlborough, MA. At the day-long workshop, the teachers worked together and designed some creative classroom activities centered on STEM tools, like SpheroE-BloxCubetto, and more!
