This is the final section on Cities and Us. In this section you are going to do a questionnaire survey. For your survey, please choose a teacher at your school, at least two students who come to school using different methods (this may include walking, bicycling, car, bus, train) and two adults in your neighborhood (this may include your parents). Tell them this is about a report you are creating about transportation and your city.

Here are the questions:

  1. List the different modes of transportation you used to get from home to work or school. (Modes of transportation include walking, cycling and motorized transportation).
  2. Please explain why you choose to use this mode of transportation
  3. Is this the quickest way for you to get from home to work or school?
  4. Name two things that you like about your current mode of transportation you use?
  5. Name two things that you dislike about your current mode of transportation
  6. If you had a choice, would you use a different mode of transportation to get from home to school or work?
  7. If so, what mode of transportation would you use and why?
  8. Which of following modes of transportation is the healthiest to engage in? Motor vehicle/Bicycle/Walk?
  9. Why do you think that is so?
  10. What are some of the difficulties you would expect to encounter if you walked or bicycled to work or school?
  11. Name some ways in which you think the city can make these modes of transportation safer.

This section of the survey is for the adults only:

  1. Do you think that the air in our cities can be cleaner if there are less motor vehicles on the road?
  2. Would you make an effort to drive less and use a different mode of transportation?  Why or why not?

Share with them the story about the City of Atlanta that we read about in Part 2. Share with them the fact that children’s health improved when there was a ban on the use of so many vehicles during the 1996 Summer Olympics.

  1. Would you seriously make an effort to drive less and also encourage your friends to drive less as well?
  2. Would you car pool with a friend to get to work in order to reduce the air pollution in your city?
  3. Would you contact city officials about ways in which they city can reduce the numbers of motor vehicles on the roads?

Put your surveys together and you may be surprised about the types of answers you will get!

MAKE A HUGE REPORT INCLUDING ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE LEARNED. CREATE A NICE BOOKLET AND SHARE IT WITH THE OFFICIALS IN YOUR CITY, YOUR PARENTS, FRIENDS, FAMILY MEMBERS!

I hope you have enjoyed our little series on cities!
