Imagine math software that let’s kids move at their own pace. Imagine it being aligned to the Common Core State Standards (the standard skills and learning outcomes that have been adopted by forty five states and the District of Columbia). Imagine that this software is a series of games and levels that students find engaging. Now imagine that this program uses absolutely NO language meaning that English language learners are just as capable of using it. This software sounds unreal, but it absolutely exists in ST Math by Mind Research.

Recently, ST Math awarded my school a grant and we have been using this software since August with the students. The software (which can be used on computers and iPads) works by having students solve math puzzles to pass each level. These puzzles help students develop skills in all core areas- for fifth grade, this is fractions, decimals, division, and place value. The program is completely self-guided. There is minimal to virtually no teacher-involvement with using this software.

Its long-term effects have yet to be seen. But anecdotally, this program is working wonders with my students. I’ve seen students with very little number sense, increase in their ability to use mathematical reasoning. I’ve seen students become fluent with math facts, and make hypotheses that show a deep understanding of math. While part of this is accredited to traditional classroom learning, I cannot deny that ST math has been an integral part in my students’ learning. My students have displayed mastery many skills that we haven’t yet reached in the school year and I truly believe that the integration of ST math into their lives has helped tremendously.

This software is absolutely phenomenal, and every student can benefit from it academically!
